Chicago Marathon: Week 4 Day 5
Technically this is my first run this week. I was busier than anticipated and my motivation was lacking somewhat, so I didn’t pre-plan when I was going to run very well. No worries though. I have determined how I am going to get in all 4 scheduled runs for this week without sacrificing any mileage.
This morning I did 6. I will run another 4 tonight. I will...

Chicago Marathon: Week 3, Day 4
It’s hard to keep these daily recaps interesting, but I’ll try my best.
I met Jordan at Sam’s Club after work. We spent a ridiculous amount of money on delicious, healthy food. Then we ran around my neighborhood. It was cooler today, which was a nice surprise,
We decided while running, that the Twin Cities Marathon 2013 needs to become a tumblr...

Chicago Marathon: Week 3, Day 3
The air was thick, and stagnant. I felt like it was wrapped around me like a snuggie my whole run. I was breathing, but I felt like I wasn’t getting any oxygen. I wanted to quit multiple times, but I went to that place where you switch off your mind, and your body just keeps going on autopilot until it’s over.
I haven’t seen an 11:00 mile in a...

Chicago Marathon Training: Week 3 Day 1
Today was a cross training day so I hopped on the bike trainer while watching really, really vapid TV.
On a somewhat related note… You may have noticed that I’ve been quieter than usual as of late. There’s a major reason why. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to go into any details at this point. Just know that I’m keeping a...

Chicago Marathon Training: Week 2 Day 7
I finished up my second week of training with a quick 6 mile run this morning. I was out the door by 7:30 to try and beat the heat. It appears that I was a bit late however. It was sunny and steamy already. I ran with a handheld water bottle just to be safe and really concentrated on keeping my heart rate down despite the rising temperatures.
I have a...

Chicago Marathon Training: Week 2 Day 3
I’m on vacation this week, so I was lucky enough to get a 6 mile run in first thing in the morning. It was humid and sprinkling, but the temperature was in the 60’s.
Jordan did the first portion of the run with me. She’s in her taper week so I finished the last little bit on my own. I was starting to feel some IT band soreness in mile...

What is your favorite protein shake? I don’t normally make them, but a friend asked for some recipes.

What app/program do you use to track your runs? I like how it displays the data, but I can’t figure out what this is!
I have a Garmin GPS watch. All the stats/maps that I post are from the Garmin Connect website.
Anonymous asked: I don't exactly remember when but it was about 3-4 months ago I asked you how to become a runner you gave me some great advice and shared your story with me and also suggested I look into C25K. Well, I just wanted to let you know I have finished the C25K this week and love the way I feel and how my body and mind love running too. I never would have done this program if not for your story...

2 easy, chilly miles at Lake of Isles today. Jordan is in her taper week for her first half marathon, so it was a short run this morning.
The temperature was absolutely perfect. I was actually a little cold before we started. I would be happy if it could stay cool in the mornings all summer. I know that’s not reality, but a girl can dream!

Nurse: ok let’s take your pulse.
Nurse: Hmmmm. Let me do that again.
Nurse (sounding concerned): Your heart rate is very low.
Me: Well, I’m a distance runner.
Nurse: That makes sense then.
Me (in my head): Woohoo!!!
Totally made my day.

Chicago Marathon Training: Week 2 day 1
I ran with Ms. Melinda today. We started in Fort Snelling State Park, ran almost to Minnehaha Falls, and then back to the park. It was in the 70’s and breezy today, which was a nice change from the heat and humidity we have been experiencing lately.
So we chatted and we ran. Before we knew it, 4 miles were done and we were back at the car. This was...

Sunday Funday
I woke up at 5:30 this morning to get my long run in. I just wasn’t feeling it yesterday, and bailed early. So the second time was the charm. It was only 72 degrees when I hit the pavement, but man was it humid. I got sweat in my eyes at least 3 times. Ouch! I did 8.0 miles in 1:24:06. Average pace 10:30. Which was right on my goal pace for Chicago. When I got home, I took a quick shower,...

Chicago Marathon Training: Wk 1 Day 4
Jordan met me at my place today for what we thought was going to be an easy 3 mile speedwork session.
We were so wrong. It was hot. Really hot. Uncomfortably hot. We weren’t even a mile in when we decided to switch our focus from speedwork, to finishing without puking.
We took a water/towel off break after 2 miles and then reluctantly finished the...

Chicago Marathon Training:Wk 1 day 3
My original plan was to knock out my 4 mile run right after work. It was 84 degrees, sunny and humid. I wasn’t in the mood to be that hot of a mess, so I took a nap instead.
Yep, that’s how I roll. Napping on National Running Day. Don’t worry, I still made it out there. A quick little thunderstorm rolled through around 7pm. So by the time I...

Chicago Marathon Training: Week 1 Day 2
Today was supposed to be a 3.5 mile tempo run.
1 mile warm-up, 2 miles 15-45 seconds faster than race pace, 1/2 mile cool down.
Eff that. I ran fast the whole time. Why? Because sometimes you just don’t have another option. Some days you are so stuck inside your own head that you can’t do anything other than channel it into the pavement.

Chicago Marathon training: Wk 1, Day 1: Strength Training/Cross training
I did 10 miles on the bike trainer for my cross training. I really need to get my bike off the trainer and back out on the road. Life has been getting in the way lately, so I haven’t made it to the bike shop yet for a new tube.
I then did 30 minutes of strength training at home. I couldn’t muster up the energy...
